OK, it's true. We couldn't sit still for 5 minutes without ripping down a few walls. We just needed to see what was underneath! First up? The fireplace!
When we first looked at this house, we speculated what would be underneath the wood planking over the fireplace. Surprise! It's red-painted bricks (why?)!
The good news is that we will likely be painting the fireplace white to open the space up, and though the red will be tough to cover, it's not impossible.
The mantle also came down very easily (vs the bolt-studded mantle we took down over the summer!) so there was no heavy work there.
The real challenge will be taking out the wood stove and removing the circular surround. We want to scale the fireplace back and put in a nice marble stone to make everything feel a little lighter.
Also... what's the deal with that fire-tending closet? No clue what we're going to do there. Below are some ideas we have for the fireplace!
In the modern USA, Sears department store (formerly Sears & Roebuck) is in a sad state. Though they have tried to re-emerge in the internet age as a fast fashion, low cost, family retailer, their sales have been suffering and their market-share is all but obsolete.
But, once upon a time, Sears was the go-to for families all over America. Before the birth of major mall retailers, small town folks across the US relied on the Sears catalogue to get them up to date on the latest fashions, home goods, and technologies. Sears was also a delivery home builder - for a few hundred dollars you could order a Sears "kit home" and the American dream was yours. Amazing!
"Buying a foreclosure - No one cares but you!"
1. So said our attorney, and yes, she was right.
Ok, that isn’t completely fair, however, it is pretty close to the truth. When buying a home (especially a foreclosure) just remember that no one has as much to lose or gain as you. The success of the buying process is entirely on you. Even though you are likely not a professional home-buyer, you will have to monitor the process closer than you ever imagined.
